Children Making Animation Films
von Sigrid Lemm |
I studied creative painting at the Hochschule der Kunst (now the UdK)
in Berlin. In 1992 a friend of mine convinced me to attend the Animation
Film Festival in Stuttgart. Up until then I had always considered animation
films to be like a superficial entertainment. Thus at the end of my
studies, I came into contact with artisitic animation films totally
against my will. Since then though, a day hasn’t passed, in which
I was not occupied with either animation films or animated cartoon
films.
In 1999-2000 I was a guest student in a Berlin paint therapy project
(paint therapy according to Kramer/Rubin). From 2000-2002 I founded
and led the Animated Film Workshop at the Institute for New Media in
Rostock, and in 2004 I founded the Animation Film Workshop Lakritzelei
in Berlin.
I allow my experiences from the time in the paint therapy project to
consciously flow into my work with children. As I am convinced that
there is always more hidden in children, than they know, I like to
work with students from centres for special needs. The motivations
phase requires a lot of time, as these youths have very little self-confidence.
The subsequent success though is all the more appreciated. I have also
created animation film projects with deaf children as well as those
who either have poor eyesight or who are blind.
In animation film work, there are a lot of possibilities. It is important
to show children, artistic animation films, so that they will be inspired
to create their own figures and to invent their own stories. In my
opinion, it is a waste of time to copy and animate an idol such as
Bart Simpson.

boy… only he can’t swim. |
Unfortunately, the amazing animation
films are rarely shown on televisions. One has to get out and visit
the animation film festivals in in Stuttgart, Leipzig, and Dresden.
