Children Making Animation Films
von Sigrid Lemm |
Another child, had always taken the work that they began very earnestly.
She always demonstrated a lot of enjoyment. Her images set the tone
for the film. I always told the children, that they could make pauses
when sequences were too laborious. They should make sure that, making
the animation film remained fun for them.
One day M expressed to the accompanying researcher that she no longer
enjoyed drawing what she was currently doing.
M had never admitted that to me. M had not sought out any other activity,
and had not asked me for another task. M had continued to work through
clenched teeth.
When I learnt of M’s problem (but not through M) I first offered
her something else to do. M resolutely declined this.
I frequently talked to M about the term duty.
I told M that I believe, that one only does well, what they enjoy doing
and that in an animation film there are lots of different jobs and
that it is best when one makes sure there is change – or helps
others now and then.
M. is what her drawings are all about, very self-confident. M likes
to draw, and invents very extreme and witty characters. M was one of
the most important draughtswoman in the film, and I think that the
film meant a lot to her. The boredom began to emerge through the arduousness
of the animation and her inability, to break up the monotonous work.

In our rounds I spoke directly about
this topic and M said it was ok, „I’ll continue on
with what I drew the last time.” (That was exactly what she
supposedly didn’t want to do.) I offered M another task.
M smiled at the idea of being allowed to do exactly this other
task right now. M suppressed her reaction though and said: “No.
I’ll finish-off what’s left from yesterday first.”
I tell M that I saw how she had just smiled. “You would surely
prefer to do what I just suggested, wouldn’t you?” M
smiled briefly, because she was obviously glad to be recognized,
but remained steadfast with her duty.
„
Should I tell you what you should so now?”, I asked M. “Yes”,
M said and probably thought that a higher entity would release her
from her duty and serve her another (nicer) task. I didn’t
do that immediately though. In order to tempt her out of her reserves
I said: ”Good. I tell you... you continue on with the drawings
from yesterday.” The teacher laughed about it, and M said very
acquiescently: “O.K.”
Now I had to laugh a little too, and released M from her duty.
